Where does consciousness come from?

In other word: why am I me. Why couldn't my conciousness be in the body of someone or something else. How did my/your conciousness come to be?

tynamite's avatar Scientists have been trying to figure this out from the beginning of time. This question will never be answered.

Some scientists believe that the universe is a fractal, shooting out from a seed using a simple fractal. Some scientists believe that there is an order to things (including subatomic particles that can be at two places at the same time, etc), Those people believe that if something makes no sense, no matter how crazy it is, that's it's only because we don't yet understand it. So therefore everything makes sense, and things only make no sense, if we haven't figured out the reasons for it. Some scientists believe otherwise, that some things will always make no sense.

Some scientists believe in inflation theory, that explains The Big Bang, and provides theories for parrallel universes; and some others that the universe is a fractal. The problem is that if you believe in the fractal, you will therefore believe that there is no free will and believe in determinism instead.

In physics, the more lower down scientists get, the more illogical things are. However, we have the theory of relativity for the visual world we see to make sense gravity and the forces around us, and we have the quantum theory to make sense of the subatomic world. Without e =mc² or the theory of relativity, we wouldn't have GPS. Without quantum theory, we wouldn't have electric devices, and atomic clocks.

Science is all about finding logical explanations for the rules that govern the universe. It is not about finding out how stuff works, like a padlock or an iPhone. That's the lie you're given in school, to help make learning easier for you, while you learn about flowers, the water cycle, solids liquids and gases, circuits and magnets.

Now in science, we have made sense of how the macro world works, and how the micro world works, with both theories; but what we cannot do, is unite both theories together. We still do not know what makes gravity so powerful, despite being so weak, in comparison to the other 3 fundamental forces such as electromagnetism. In the subatomic world, the rules of gravity, defined in the theory of relativity break down, and no longer work.

This means that our understanding of science is wrong, but we know what we know, and do what we do, because it is the best understanding what we have. That is what Science is truly about. Every 20 years, our science is proven wrong. Every 50 years, some scientist discovers something, that challenges our complete understanding of science, so we have to adapt our scientific model to match. Right now, it's neutrinos being faster than light. In 1896 it was radioactivity. Before that it was the discovery of atoms.

However, we can make sense of the objective world, of energy and matter. Things that you can put inside a box and close a lid on top of it.
What we cannot do, is make sense of the subjective world, of emotions, life, and consciousness.

We don't have an understanding of emotions, as if we built teleporter that broke your particles apart and pieced them them together in another country, your current emotion would be wiped. This is because your emotions are the result electronic impulses going on in your brain, and nobody knows how they work. (We can do CAT scans to scan your where your brain activity is, showing a heatmap image.) There are also cases of heart transplant patients, who have gained a dual personality they can switch to, or a voice in their head they can have conversations with, of the person whose heart it was. One patient got the heart of an athelete, and became an amazingly fast runner. Memories and personality being stored in the heart. How the fuck does that work?

We do not have an understanding of life. Scientists have watched human life being born from fertilisation, to the womb, until the baby is born, all of it on tape. There is a part of it of the process they cannot get, that skips, their eyes and detectors just can't see it. We can't even clone sheep without them having deformities. How the fuck does that work?

We do not have an understanding of consciousness. People who die end up weighing more, and although we can now map people's thoughts onto a screen to create blurry images of what they're thinking about (yes we can, to help alzeimers, the thoughts of videos watched, actually matched youtube videos), we still don't know what makes people conscious. Scientists have made dead people come back to life, by replacing their blood with plasma. Conscious people also have the ability to learn and ask questions. How the fuck does that work?

The answer is that we will never know.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
