What is an itch? Why do we itch and what's the evolutionary reason? Why does scratching make it go away?

Part 1 of the canonical "Itch" series:

What is an itch? Why do we itch and what's the evolutionary reason? Why does scratching make it go away?
Why do we get random itches?
Why do we get phantom itches that we can't find?
Why would scratching one part of the body cause another part to itch?

Part 2:

Thus, What cause sunburns to itch so much? Is it bad to scratch them?
Thus, What cause scabs and cut wounds to itch when healing?
Thus, What cause bruises to itch? Is it bad to scratch them?
Thus, Why does crystal meth make people itch?
Thus, What causes itching when exercising or running?
Thus, What causes bone fractures to itch?
Thus, What causes itching when we pull out a hair from our body or head?

Part 3:

Lastly, How did humans evolve to scratch healing wounds?

tynamite's avatar Sometimes when skin is itchy, it's because bacteria are making it itchy by being naughty moving around really fast to make you want to scratch it. What they do, is they dance around frantically on you and run and stuff moving really fast to make it itchy. When you scratch yourself, you are spreading the bacteria to more places so they stop making you itch now you've given them what they want as they can not infest you more.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
