Why does western culture detest polygamy while being permissive toward adultery and extramarital affairs?
One of the reasons behind allowing polygamy in non-western culture is to channel men's tendency to have intimate relationships with several women concurrently.

From your perspective, it's perfectly understandable why polygamy should be allowed in society. After all, if it's men's tendency, why not?
I can answer your question to explain why polygamy is banned in Western society. The answer may be hard to believe at first, and I'm not the source of this.
Men are genetically engineered to go after multiple women to sprout their seed, whereas women are genetically engineered to go for the best candidate to have children with. Because of this, if you put a bunch of good looking men and women in a room, you will find that the matches of who the genders like would be skewed. Let's imagine that these people are similar to the cast of Gossip Girl or Vampire Diaries.
Typically all the men would go after most of the women, whereas most the women would go after the Chase Crawford's or the Ian Somerhalder's. The other men wouldn't get a look in. (You could argue that men are more shallow than women, as women don't use looks as their first point of call when chatting to the opposite sex, but the skewed desires of the genders still applies.) If you think about it, you will notice that it's true. Women generally aim for the top of the pyramid, whereas with men, not so much, or that their aim is more distributed.
On that note, the reason why Western society places significant importance on marriage is to ration women amongst men. If polygamy was legal, three things would happen.
Those are three reasons why Western culture detests polygamy, or more specifically, the government. You've all been brainwashed into thinking it was because of the love of marriage, health risks, or to respect women's bodies.
