Why does western culture detest polygamy while being permissive toward adultery and extramarital affairs?

One of the reasons behind allowing polygamy in non-western culture is to channel men's tendency to have intimate relationships with several women concurrently.

tynamite's avatar Western culture is not permissive towards adultery and extramarital affairs. Despite affairs being common, society still doesn't condone affairs. One only has to watch a soap to know that affairs are condemned, and that they're anything but permissive when it comes to affairs.

From your perspective, it's perfectly understandable why polygamy should be allowed in society. After all, if it's men's tendency, why not?

I can answer your question to explain why polygamy is banned in Western society. The answer may be hard to believe at first, and I'm not the source of this.

Men are genetically engineered to go after multiple women to sprout their seed, whereas women are genetically engineered to go for the best candidate to have children with. Because of this, if you put a bunch of good looking men and women in a room, you will find that the matches of who the genders like would be skewed. Let's imagine that these people are similar to the cast of Gossip Girl or Vampire Diaries.

Typically all the men would go after most of the women, whereas most the women would go after the Chase Crawford's or the Ian Somerhalder's. The other men wouldn't get a look in. (You could argue that men are more shallow than women, as women don't use looks as their first point of call when chatting to the opposite sex, but the skewed desires of the genders still applies.) If you think about it, you will notice that it's true. Women generally aim for the top of the pyramid, whereas with men, not so much, or that their aim is more distributed.

On that note, the reason why Western society places significant importance on marriage is to ration women amongst men. If polygamy was legal, three things would happen.

  • The good men (all of them) wouldn't be taken, as polygamy is legal. As marriage would be defunct, there would be nothing stopping the good, or shall I say, the most desirable men from having multiple women. It's not the men that complain about the all good women being taken, it's the other way round. So therefore men would be hoarding loads of women. With men hoarding loads of women, there wouldn't be enough to go round for the men. The men sleeping around with loads of women, of which you speak of, will not happen!
  • There would be a population imbalance between the rich and poor, as the rich would typically have all the children, as they have all the money. This would not be good for the government, as there would be less money and people to tax. That's why certain countries tax married couples less, and give them rebates/welfare; as an incentive to get married and contribute to the system. Could you imagine a country where working class and poor people are too poor to attract women? It would swing (not become) that way. Under the current system, women who can't get the married men they really want, are forced to go for the next best alternative, and that is typically the poorer male. This contributes to why poor people are having children nowadays, because the women can't get rich men, as they're already taken.
  • Under a liberatarian (free market, think Bitcoin) state, the ones who have the supply of what people want (women/oil barons), control the world. Polygamy would decrease the supply of women, hence increasing demand. Without trying to sound offensive, as the market price of women would be very high, their value would go up. ;) This would make women much more powerful in society. This is one of the real reasons why prostitution is banned, to keep the value of women down.

Those are three reasons why Western culture detests polygamy, or more specifically, the government. You've all been brainwashed into thinking it was because of the love of marriage, health risks, or to respect women's bodies.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
