Being someone who is a CTO for a hotel booking website, my exprience tells me that the best way to become a CTO is to have a personal or client project that's been done, that shows you know what you're talking about, not just something that looks good. In noob terms, ask yourself how easily a finished project can be expanded upon. Mark Zuckerberg is a visionary like Steve Jobs, not a good CTO. He made a website in PHP and regretted it. A real CTO would never make such noobish mistakes that would require a website be refactored after so many years. You need an idea person and a technical person, someone who can think in the same way a computer thinks.
