Is there a scientific explanation for the evangelical Christian phenomenon of speaking in tongues?

If an atheist and a Christian were discussing the 'gift of tongues,' what would be the atheist's psychological justification?
To be clear, I'm not trying to discredit any religious beliefs here; I just know science has explanations for some 'religious experiences' and was wondering if this was one of them.

tynamite's avatar Being in church and getting engrossed in intense worship, is a form of hypnotism, where no one is aware that the act of hypnotism is being carried out. The people who speak in tongues are hypnotised, and the priest is the hypnotist. If you knew how hypnotism worked, you'd understand.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
