If you commit a murder, what's worse, being in prison for murder or being in a mental hospital for insanity? What are the pros and cons?

If you commit a murder, would it be better to go to prison, or go to mental hospital?

tynamite's avatar My limited knowledge of UK prisons, says that they are so overcrowded, that some of them don't allow visitors, because the prison doesn't want to show people the non-optimum conditions they are now living in.

However I know two people who went to a mental institution.

The first one, had a bad childhood, and has never felt love from anyone in his life. He became depressed because of an incident that his mother never allowed him to express to anyone, including the doctors. He jumped out the window bare foot from an institution once, without injuries luckily, and tried to run away. He ended up back in it. He was going to get "electro-therapy", possibly have the frontal part of his brain scooped out for a labatomy and/or be fed to a drugs pump for the rest of his life to keep him operational, until someone that knew him, came and rescued him by convincing the staff to let him go. All that, because of depression!

The second one has schizophrenia, who is constantly in and out of institutions, if she ever stops taking her medication. If she stops taking her medication, she will act normal, until the time that she attempts to murder someone that infringes on her life. Nothing really bad really happened to her inside an institution. She was just given medication and constant check-ups on the ward. It is sad, that her only contact with the outside world in the months she was there, was a weekly telephone call. But at least she never had anyone try to give her a treatment, to make her easier for the staff to deal with. She got to watch TV.

I visited a mental home when I was 4. Because people there had severe deformities that you've never seen in your life, I repressed the memory. I can't remember it.

Legal detainment for the acts you've chosen to do, or legal detainment for the syncrasises you can't change. Take your pick.

At least people in prison have experienced the outside world, and know who Amy Winehouse is, even though she's dead. Some people in mental institutions have been there, their whole life.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
