Why are some people with academic credentials not very smart?

This is a follow-up question to Why are many people who are very smart not also rich?.

tynamite's avatar I am intelligent. Everyone says that I'm clever. Now for the answer...

Intelligence does not equate to having common sense.
Having degrees helps people use acquired knowledge (from a book), but it doesn't help them use their applied knowledge (about the world).
Intelligence and smart are two completely different things.

When it comes to seeing things, that's something that I am good at. I see something and say something clever I notice about it.
When it comes to actual thinking, the nitty gritty stuff that takes actual effort and time to complete, that's something that I am not good at.

I find thinking hard, because I have to make an actual effort to do it. Because I am clever, I can live my life hardly ever thinking and get away with it. I mostly am thinking about nothing. I do not like to think. Thinking for me is usual and strange.

Because most people aren't clever like me, they think on a regular basis, so find it easy to think. Thinking is natural for them, hence why they have common sense. They can use their applied knowledge about the world and put it together.

They are good at piecing lots of different information together, to create common sense using applied knowledge. They apply the things they've learnt about various things, and use it for life skills. I cannot do this, because I do not think! I am good at remembering blocks of acquired knowledge, and telling you them. I have a really good memory. I never forget anything anyone tells me about themselves. I see blurry images with vivid details of everything I remember, and can tell you where I remember every piece of information I know. I am the only one in my classes who can give presentations without notes, because I am good at acquired knowledge. In conversations, I bring up lots of factual things, so my brother calls me an encyclopaedia.

I think differently to the way that you think, because I am clever.

Here's a conversation I had yesterday
My friend said to me "Do you know how clever you are?"
I responded "No. Every time I meet someone, they say that I'm clever within 3 hours, and I don't know why."
"That's because you know a lot of stuff."
"No it's not about that. I could be talking about something stupid, or not topical and they would still say that. I think it's the way that I think." After a pause I said, "No, I still don't get it. I don't have any common sense though."
"Yeah I've noticed"
No I don't have any common sense. It's nonexistant. I have none whatsoever."

An example of me using intelligence
There was a comic image about parents seeing their child reading a book and saying that he should be using the computer. We were asked to explain what the image meant to us and the computing industry. I said that the comic was being sarcastic, by saying that in the future, people won't read books anymore and go outside, and that instead they'll just be on computers and play video games. Nobody else got that, and the woman holding the meeting said I was right, and then she looked at the date of the comic. It said 1991.

Me and my housemates were talking about advertising, and I said that because of advancing technology people are becoming stupid. I said that because we can now pay for people's time, instead of exposure, we can now influence and control people and make them do what we want, so they don't have to think and find information for themselves. Nobody understood this.

An example of me with no common sense
I wanted some coffee so I tried to put the kettle on. I kept flicking the switch down and it wasn't working. I was told to do something else. I said that I was, whilst doing the same thing. He eventually told me to flick the switch up after giving up watching me fail 30 times.

I was in the supermarket with my housemate, and we were in the sauces section. I asked, "Why do you buy oyster sauce if it tastes nasty? Oysters taste nasty." His response was, "Do you buy salt, and does that taste nice?"

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
