Does the US have comparatively more prisons, prisoners, and prison spending than other countries? Why?

This is a follow-up question to Does the U.S. have more prisons per capita than other countries?.

tynamite's avatar The US has more prisoners than the whole of Europe combined. Why this is, I do not surely know. What I do know, is that it's not because more Americans commit crimes than in other countries. That hypothesis is nonsense.

Given that America is corrupt, and will always favour profitable options over ethical ones no matter the consequences, I believe that the reason for this, is because...

  1. Prison is a cheap way of getting eradicating the poor scum from the money making machine that is society. Considering the Healthcare Senate Bill and the mass homelessness the government caused by making innocent people bankrupt instead of raising taxes for the rich, this isn't farfetched.
  2. Prisoners undergo forced labour, and are whipped and denied of their food and wage unless they do the forced work. The recent prison strike didn't go well.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
