Is our personality and intelligence predetermined by our genes? How much of who we are is determined by genes and how much by the culture we live in and the events we go through?

2011 answer

The answer is that it's both.

Intelligence is both inherited and learnt.
Our personality is partly inherited from the day we're born, and partly constructed from our upbringing and the life we lived as a child to make us the way we are.

To examine what parts are inherited and which are acquired, that's a different question altogether. You could write an essay about that. I did, and it's really good. It's called Nature vs Nurture.

2019 Update

It has been found that genetics accounts for 60% of the grades of students.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
