How is the United States different from the Roman Empire?

I'm having trouble coming up with distinctions:

then: barbarians, now: terrorists
then: rich senators, now: rich senators
then: separate political class, now: separate political class
then: wars on every known continent, now: military presence every one with a human population.
then: "Representative" Republic, now: "Representative" Republic
then: high barriers to citizenship, now: high barrier to citizenship
then: torture (crucifixion), now: torture (waterboarding, or sleep deprivation, or forced isolation, etc.)
then: pointless military campaigns to distract populace
now: Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq? Iran too?

Are we any different? Are the current Tea Party candidates running for Nero?

  • The rich people in Roman Empire never had to pay any tax, whereas rich people in the US are required pay tax and do.
  • The army in the Roman Empire was classed as upmost importance, and they were given special privileges and respect in society. This isn't the case for the US people.
  • The Roman Empire made an effort to make sure that everyone is healthy - even the slaves! In the US, that is not the case. How sad is that?
  • The Roman Empire had a better attitude towards the poor people than the US have now. In US you can go in prison just because you are poor while in Roman Empire you could live untroubled, poor and free life as long as you paid your debts.
  • The Roman Empire was not shy of admitting that they invaded into other countries and took their goodies. The US likes to lie about this and broadcast loads of propaganda about the war.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
