Why do I think I know how particular Quora members would sound and act in real life?

I don't know any of you personally. But I create you in my mind. My brain automatically fills in the blanks based on the words you write. What parts of my brain am I using and what processes does my body conduct when I do this?

tynamite's avatar We use prejudices we have gained from our past experiences, of observing and dealing with people in life, to give ourselves the images of what certain people would sound and act like in real life.

A good example of this in action how people including yourself perceive...

  • Cheerleaders
  • Gays
  • Teenage boys and girls
  • The opposite sex
  • People who live far away from your country.

Everyone has prejudices. Anyone who says that they don't is lying. Prejudice and discrimination are two completely different things. Me along with many others can believe that camp people always have funny stories they can tell, without being prejudice. British people can believe that black people were stealing the most in the riots, as they're the poorest people in the country; without being racist.

As humans we like to put people into categories so that we can understand and identify with them. We also do that to make us safer so we can judge people as bad parents or dangerous. This helps us understand the confusing world around us, as people are an enigma. We as humans, like to our trust into things that are consistent and stable.

Now I'm going to tell you some facts about me. I'll give you the sort of introductory facts that you can identify someone by. Right now I'll give you some personally identifiable information.

I'm from the UK.

Now I'm going to tell you some actions that I have done to people in the past.

I've once skipped 10 months of lessons and never got caught.

What do you think I act and sound like now?

I've once managed to walk outside a building with 6 girls following me around who apparently like me, with another girl across the road, just so I can make her jealous. I thought that she was treating me like a prick on the phone when her cousin phoned me, but it was a prank call. Her cousin's friend told me she was an unfaithful slag, and I spoke to her cousin on the phone who sounds just like her. o_O

What do you think I act and sound like now?

I've once asked my brother why he buys soy sauce if it tastes nasty. I've also made people laugh online talking to them, strangers in pubs, and other such places. What do you think I act and sound like now?

So there's your answer to the question.

PS. Did you know that my voice fluctuates in pitch depending on whether I'm having a conversation, being jokey, or none of the two?

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
