Why haven't major companies like Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo succeeded in creating social networking platforms?

tynamite's avatar Google is only good at making algorithms, and they haven't made an original product in over 10 years. All they do is acquire companies and imitate them. The recent Youtube and Google design are copying the design of Facebook, Buddycloud, and Diaspora. Google cannot do anything else.

Yahoo is stuck in old media, and is not good at new media.

Microsoft could make a social network if they wanted to, but they own a 1.6% share of Facebook so they don't have to. Microsoft is the only company out of the 3 that understands platforms (as described in the leaked Google Plus status), and Microsoft Research shows great promise. Microsoft is a software company, not an advertising company, and they have enough problems keeping that afloat with the threat that Google is making for Office, Windows Phone, Windows, and Bing. Microsoft has bigger problems on their hands to tackle, and social networking isn't worth considering. Microsoft could make a good social network if they wanted to.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
