Is it ever acceptable for a man to hit a woman in self-defense?

At a party a drunk girl wanted the couch I was crashing on, so she
started punching me in the face (while I was asleep) in order to get the couch for herself. She split my lip open, and bloodied me pretty bad. I woke up, grabbed her and threw her backwards over a coffee table and into a bunch of beer bottles. My friend, who I had known since Kindergarten (now we are post-college) got into a huge argument with me and basically said I should have taken the blows "like a man," I argue I have every right to prevent bodily harm to myself. My friend and I are not speaking, and there is a divide amongst our group of friends. I've never raised my hand to a woman before. So, I ask reddit, is it acceptable to hit a woman in self defense?

NOTE : This is different from In which situations should a man be allowed to hit a woman? because that one is a general question, and this asks about particular problem faced by the OP.

tynamite's avatar Your friend thinks that you are exaggerating, and that the woman is weak. I've been punched in the face by a 7 year old and got a nose bleed. I don't blame him. She's drunk, and I would probably tell you the same! After all, she is a woman, right?

If a woman hit me, I wouldn't hit her back. But if she was to fight me, I would hit her back. I would start by pushing her on the shoulders to get her to back off from me. If that doesn't work, I would pin her against the wall, stand back, and ask her "Are you starting?", and if she starts, then it starts. This would be highly dependant on how viciously she is fighting me. But seriously, blood on your face? I got punched in the face by a 7 year old once and got a nose bleed. I wouldn't flip a woman over tables for that.

I never use my full strength, but I do use some strength.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
