Is there ever a time when it's OK to show men or women as sexual objects?

tynamite's avatar From the general consensus I hear in feminist circles, it's okay to objectify men and women if their bodies are required to sell the product involved, ie undergarments.

Which makes some feminists find Esquire magazine unethical for using women as "ornaments" to sell cars, as described as the Esquire editor.

But just because you are selling clothes or undergarments, doesn't mean you have to or are right to use sex to sell your product.. (Objectifying and sexualising are two different things.) (The model below is a porn star.)

Also, it's okay for Miley Cyrus to twerk on stage to Robin Thicke at the VMAs and have a soft porn video for her song Wrecking Ball, because the objectification is done for the purpose of a woman's power, to flaunt her sexual prowess.

But it's not okay for half naked women to parade around Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines video, because the objectification is used for the purpose of a man's dreams, to satisfy the male inclination for sex and male gaze. (A double standard if you ask me.)

Some feminists dislike Page 3, as the person who made up Say No To Page 3 made it up because the half naked woman had more coverage than a woman who won an Olympic gold medal, which she thought was systematic women being brushed under the carpet intellectually and men getting more coverage when they do win awards. She argues that these attitudes help women receive sexism like for example when they are discouraged from pursuing technology.

Some will argue that because it's a woman's choice to model for Page 3, that she's flaunting her sexual prowess (over men) so there's nothing wrong with it as she's consenting, even if the sexuality is used for the purpose of a man and not a woman; but some will argue that it adds up to Rape Culture teaching guys that sex and beauty is the number 1 thing women are to be valued for.

It's all very complex, and different feminists will have varying views on the matter.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
