What are the arguments for and against minimum wage laws?

Workers shouldn't be destitute.

Employees should pay what they want.
Jobs that are worth less than the minimum wage, won't get done (legally), and workers who would do such jobs stay unemployed (legally).

Benefits for the government economically

None. Countries with slums where people work cleaning human excrement are still rich. A minimum wage doesn't protect the government. They still get their tax and citizens working jobs.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?
