If you were able to download a perfect copy of your consciousness into a computer, would you still be alive after your physical body dies?

Would you feel you've achieved a significant step toward immortality? Or would the "you" that matters die with your body?

Edit: I realize there's no definitive answer to this question. I'm more interested in your opinion; namely, how satisfied would you feel, knowing that a perfect copy of yourself continues after your body dies.

tynamite's avatar No. You would be archived. Think of the consciousness as a ROM that goes into an Emulator, like a Sega Mega Drive or Game Boy Advance emulator.

Having the concious.file on your computer would not make the person be alive.
But if the rom was executed into the emulator, you would in fact be alive.
If the emulator was run on a PC, all you would be able to do is communicate via a text chat like on msn.
But if the emulator was run on a robot, you would have sensors so you would be able to move about and see and hear things.

You wouldn't be able to feel the things that you touch, but you would still be alive.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
