This is a follow-up question to In general, is one sex smarter than the other?.

Yes and no. The answer is not clear cut. I believe that people start out thinking yes, and change their minds later on in life.
Not only do women posess more emotional intelligence, they also triumph over men in academic results. Not many people know this, so it's understandable why men would think the opposite, as most intelligent jobs such as scientists, lawyers and writers are taken by men. It's very easy to watch tv, and take away from that, that men are smart, and that women are dumb. This view doesn't come from a book, but it is a social pressure which is imprinted into our minds without us realising it. You can confirm this social pressure by asking boys who are 4 and 5 years old, then asking them where they got the information from. Men being smarter than women is one of the many social pressures that you can attribute on tv, that indoctrinate the minds of young people as young as 4 years old.
I believe that women don't have those intelligent jobs because their greater social intelligence ensures that they can get on in life without putting the hard work in. Below is a quote I said online somewhere else.
