Why do people say suicide is selfish?

tynamite's avatar Technically yes, as selfishness is the act of doing things for your own gain.

Oxford Dictionary
(of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for other people; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure:
However, the incorrect meaning we define selfish as, is the act of doing things for your own gain, at the expense of others.

Technically, everything you do is at the expense of others. If you get a burger, an animal died for you to eat it. If you get a job, you caused someone else not to get the job. If you watch a TV channel, you caused other TV channels and advertisers to lose money.

For that reason, a moral compass of right and wrong has to be used to determine whether suicide is actually selfish or not, as for people to live their life, and civilization to exist, people have to be selfish to some extent; otherwise people would never progress anywhere in life.

To do that, we would have to take into account the choices that one has in life, when presented with an opportunity. We know that getting a job isn't selfish because people need a job to get money, and without a job, those people would have to get money in illegal ways. However, sleeping with a married person is selfish because if you did that, you would have a viable alternative. which would be not to do that. How do you force things? By prohibiting all alternatives, or there being no viable alternatives.

Now we've established what selfish is, we can now find out whether suicide is selfish or not.

You could say that suicide is selfish, because it's selfish for the suicidal person to leave loved ones behind. But it's the fact that a person is suicidal, that makes them not selfish. If someone finds themselves to be under asperity, and finds no other alternative to help themselves out of it other than to kill themselves, they're truly not selfish if they ever commit suicide.

There's people who have killed themselves for more or less of what you've been through, and if you start to view that things aren't black and white regarding the morality of it, you'll find that living life with no signs of hope anywhere, is enough to make anyone want to kill themselves, no matter how good or bad their lives are.

Suicide is strongly linked to depression, as depression, at the root, is caused by being stuck in a circumstance in life that you cannot change.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
