Why do writers refer to someone's writing as "a piece" of writing?

I don't know why, but "nice piece" has always seemed so weirdly dirty to me, when I hear people say that about someone's writing. Why do we call someone's writing "a piece" of writing?

tynamite's avatar Because writing is an art, and such writing that writers do are an artefact that we can analyse and appreciate over time for years and years. For that reason, we call it a piece of writing. A good analogy to give is an album you buy from a music store. The music is the writing, and the physical casing is the piece, given cover art, and designed for the benefit of reaching out to people.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
