What is killing innovation in video games?

Granted, there are innovative games but if you look at "most wanted games 20xx" lists it is usually a collection of sequels which promise a lot of new features and then turn out to (hopefully great) games but hardly a new chapter in video games design.

Creativity and originality require taking risks and it is more difficult to have a big hit with something new (which targets a new player audience -- or upsets the existing audience if a sequel is too different from the previous version) but what other reasons can you think of. Structural, political, technical... or is it really just pure business?

Edit:
I do not want to exclude that there are innovative games (also sequels) out there. However I do think that there are certain creativity killers stopping developers from going really wild and create the games they would really want to do. Look at what is being promised about a game 2, 3 or even 4 years before launch and then look at what is left from all those ideas. There are exceptions but what is it that eventually kills those ideas?

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
