What is the nature of the Quora server error that causes this message to be displayed?

quora beacon error

This happens pretty frequently. Is the Quora Team unaware of it? Please add a comment if this is happening to you more than once in a while.

(I've A2A Adam D. on this, but maybe if some of you followers also ask him, it'll give him more of an incentive to answer.)

tynamite's avatar Quora uses a beacon (transparent image), that uses a persistent connection, to fetch notifications, and determine whether you are logged in or not. This runs in the background, on every page on the Quora website.

Somewhere in the Quora code where ajax requests are executed, there is a timeout feature implemented, so that if the server produces no response within X seconds, the ajax halts.

This is why when clicking blue and green buttons here, of which the loading image that spins round, can sometimes stall and never disappear. It happens more often in slower web browsers. It will happen more often, if you try to load 50 Quora tabs at once, and do stuff with one tab.

Basically a "Trying to regain internet connection" and "You won't get live updates on this page until you reload." error happens, when the everlasting background process beacon produces no response once called.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
