In young children and animals, does it take a sense of self (or self-awareness) to correctly use personal pronouns like "I" and "you"?
E.g. "Alex [the parrot] also showed some comprehension of personal pronouns; he used different language when referring to himself or others, indicating a concept of "I" and "you".[17]"

Children are self aware, as they learn that they are exploring the world they live in, that different people have different names and feelings, and because things and people operate independently of each other and don't just disappear when out of sight.
