My old writing teacher said "I write because that’s how I know who I am." To what extent do other writers feel that way?

He's been published & has won awards & I respect his perspective. I want to know if his approach is unique or if a lot of writers feel that way as well.

tynamite's avatar I do not feel that way at all. Most writers write to express themselves, I do not do that at all. I hate putting personal experiences in my stories. If anyone asks me where I got my ideas from, I will say that I made everything up.

A friend said to me that writing is an expression of yourself. The first time I heard that, I had to ask what it meant. She said it means that that means I put my thoughts and experiences into the book. This is not something that I like. In my novel you can pick out things, like when Kamirah says "Stop prejudissing the dj" and Molly turns round and says "Stop prejudissing me because I'm what? Say it to my face? Say it to my face?", you can pick that out and say it came from my time at school, but you can't really say that my writing is personal expression of me. (They were at school.) My writing shows that I'm British, funny and cynical, but it doesn't say much else. I preferably would want my writing to say nothing about me at all.

I find the concepts in real life more interesting than fantasy. That's why I write what I call, real life depictions. I don't write fantasy, science fiction, romance, horror, murder mystery, childrens etc. I just write realistic stories about real life. That's me. However, I only read fantasy stories. I find them really interesting. I don't read books about real life, because I used to read them, and they aren't any good. They are a let down. I hadn't written a book yet, and I was let down by my favourite genre of books, so much that I hadn't finished any of them. I don't read about what I write about, and I don't write about what I read.

When I write about real life, I do so to show people why real life is much better than fantasy..
^^ I do not write to express myself at all ^^

Each of my books is about a different concept that I find interesting.
My first one was about the butterfly effect that happens to someone, and how that will put them in a future circumstance.
The second one was about the duality of two different cultures of people living in two different places, and the hierachy that forms between the people that don't mix around each other.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
