If one's child commits a felony like rape or murder, should one report them to the police? Why or why not?

This is a follow-up question to Is it hypocritical to not report your child to the police if you know he has committed a minor crime? Why or why not?.

tynamite's avatar If my child raped someone I wouldn't report them to the police, because I know for a definite fact that the victim would report them to the police.

If my child murdered someone, I would only report them to the police if they were a relentless person. There are people who murder to prevent themselves from having no future, and people who murder because they are callous and have no regard for other humans.

Update

I would report my child to the police if they murdered someone, as murder is an extreme crime.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
