How can I offer myself as a romantic partner to another - but down the road?
I want to position myself in such a way that I indicate that I am interested in someone, just not right now, and while I don't mind that they enjoy themselves now with others, I'd at least appreciate the opportunity to share a time and possibility together in the future.

It is funny, because you've responded as if he means literally down the road and I presume he means figuratively. That "long and convoluted" answer you don't like is my response and my interpretation of the question. Yours is genuinely funny though, not in a mean way, and it still works as a response.
