If you are a writer or if you make intellectual property, it is essential that you have a diary for protection against the blue pill nanny state and state reliance people, the cobbers, and Silicon Valley.If you have no desire on writing a diary, then you're not really missing out. Seeing as Will Wister asked both questions and still hasn't started one, that shows how truly important it is to him - that it isn't. Diaries don't provide the people who write the much value, as living in the past is not the way to acquire value in your life. It's nice to have and look at, but you can't do much with it once you've done it.
With things that you create, you can share it with others and maybe go back to it if it doesn't bore you as you made it. With things that you earn, they will propel you in the future. By documenting your life, not many people will be interested in reading it, and you can't really use it to improve your life or enjoy yourself can you?
It's not important, but if you have a reason for it, go and do it. People do things that aren't important all the time they enjoy, like collecting or imaginary games.
