How do I convince my parents to let me live alone?

I want to live alone for about a month this summer. I am 18 years old and this summer will be the summer after my senior year. My destination of choice: Martha's Vineyard. I have found an available and affordable place to rent. In MV, I intend to do some community service but also try and find myself by reading a bunch of books on the beach and taking up surfing. My parents are a little bit iffy on this idea. I don't think they want living me alone or just surfing/volunteering.

tynamite's avatar Just say what I said at 18 last year. "I would rather learn how to be independant now at 18, than to learn at 21 once I graduate." Worked for me.

If all else fails, tell them that a part of growing up is letting your children make their own mistakes, and letting them be independant. That one day you're not going to be there, so I would rather leave now, than leave later." If that fails, then say "It's okay to give me advice, but it's best to let your children make their own choices in life about what they want to do, so they can learn things for themselves, than you to make them for them for them."

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
