tynamite's avatar Soul and spirit are synonyms that also have separate meanings. This can cause confusion for people.

Shared meaning

Soul and spirit both mean the conciousness that people have that has thoughts and feelings, that can experience the afterlife in heaven.

Soul

Apart from soul music, soul means to put a strong effort into something.

Spirit

Apart from an alcoholic drink, spirit means one's morale that someone has.

Perhaps that is why people say "heart and soul" and "keep your spirits high", and not the other way round.

I think this is an interesting distinction. I worry that your definition of spirit may be under-inclusive of what spirit is. As I read it, you are saying your spirit animates both your body and soul. (note: I'm reading in here a bit and certainly another interp is possible).

No that's not what I meant. I meant your outlook on life, and the general disposition that you have for yourself. That's what I mean by morale.

You may very well be right. But I still think you're definition of spirit is "under-inclusive" (ie doesn't include the full discussion of what we think of "spirit" when we say the word). Spirit still seems to trigger ideas of other-worldlyness. Otherwise, I think the word "spritual" may be skewed under your interp. But again, I could very well be wrong...

Me

I'm not dealing with spiritual or worldliness, only spirit,

Fair enough...I'm not sure if my distiction is helpful or splitting hairs. Perhaps its both or neither.

What's an assertion, and what should I type in?

Compesh is a question and answer (and debate) website, so before you make a debate, you better learn what an assertion is. I suppose you already know what a question is, and that you've typed it in the box. ;)

An assertion, is basically a statement you can make, that is either true or false.

Richer people have better health.

The question for that would be, Do richer people have better health?

And don't forget to make your assertion, match your question.
